LOTUS

The first thing that strikes looking at Lotus is BJP. Well, there are several aspects of this lovely flower, apart from the symbol of our ruling party.

Lotus is the national flower of India, Vietnam, Sri Lanka and Bangladesh. This plant is an aquatic perennial. Under favorable circumstances its seeds may remain viable for many years, with the oldest recorded lotus germination being from that of seeds 1,300 years old recovered from a dry lakebed in northeastern China.

Lotus plant has un-imaginable capabilities that resemble human traits. Researchers report that the lotus has the remarkable ability to regulate the temperature of its flowers to within a narrow range just as humans and other warm-blooded animals do. Physiologists at the University of Adelaide in Australia, found that lotus flowers blooming in the Adelaide Botanic Gardens maintained a temperature of 30–35 °C, even when the air temperature dropped to 10 °C.

An individual lotus can live for over a thousand years and has the rare ability to revive into activity after stasis. In 1994, a seed from a sacred lotus, dated at roughly 1,300 years old ± 270 years, was successfully germinated. Just like human embryos / eggs, this plant has that capability to revive.

In Bharatiya Aryanism, we often observe lotus with divinities like Lord Vishnu, Ganesha, Lakshmi, Saraswati and many more.

The lotus plant is cited extensively with one who performs his duty without attachment, surrendering the results unto the Supreme Lord, is unaffected by sinful action, as the lotus is untouched by water and dirt around.

The lotus symbol can be easily traced in Persian Aryanism architecture. The carving of Ardashir II at Taq-i-Bustan shows Mithra standing on a lotus flower. In the bas-relief at Persepolis the king and most of his nobles each hold a lotus in their hands. The lotus flower is one of the oldest and most beautiful elements in the patterns of Persian carpets.

In Buddhism, the lotus represents purity of the body, speech, and mind as if floating above the muddy waters of attachment and desire. In Christianity, the St. Thomas Cross features a lotus underneath a cross.

Back in Egyptians times, the lotus flower was very important in their religion. Meaning creation and rebirth, it was a symbol of the sun, because at nightfall it closes and goes beneath the water and at dawn it climbs up above the water and reopens. It was the only plant to flower and fruit at the same time, as it would emerge as pure white from the depths of the muddy swamp and grow above the water.

Lotus can also often be seen in Islamic architecture of the Seljuq and later periods. The shape of a lotus occurs in the design of the perforated plaster work in the mihrab (prayer niche) of the Malik mosque in Kirman.

The lotus is the foremost symbol of beauty, prosperity and fertility. It represents eternity, purity and divinity and is widely used as a symbol of life, fertility and ever-renewing youth.

In the postures of Hatha Yoga, a major branch of Yoga, the lotus position, padmasana, is adopted by those striving to reach the highest level of consciousness, which itself is found in the thousand-petaled lotus chakra at the top of the head.
