CHANDRA / MOON

Chandra means "bright, shining or glittering" and is also known as Soma, that’s how the word “Somvaar / Monday” comes into existence, as its day dedicated to Moon / Chandra, which is one of the “Navagraha”, the nine planets of Aryanism & guardian of direction. The word "Monday" in the Greco-Roman and other Indo-European calendars is also dedicated to the Moon.

Moon is lit and nourished by the mighty Sun and it is Moon where the divine nectar of immortality “Somras” resides. That’s the reason, the chain of events gets reflected in the Faraziyat prayers, whereby it gets initiated with Sun / Khorshed Yazad, spreading its sunlight / Maher Yazad, on the Moon / MaahBokhtaar Yazad to glitter the skies and on the Water / Avaa Yazad to generate rains.

The Moon is Earth's only natural satellite and is the largest natural satellite in the Solar System relative to the size of a major planet, the fifth largest satellite in the Solar System overall, and larger than any known dwarf planet.

Since prehistoric and ancient times many cultures view the Moon astrologically and have personified the Moon as a deity.

Chandra / Moon is the second among the Navagrahas / nine planets and rules the zodiac sign Cancer, the 4th house in the natal chart. The Moon represents the feminine creative energy and the Divine Goddesss Parvati is the presiding deity of the Moon.

The Moon is easily influenced by the energies of other planets, as it symbolizes relationships and communication with others. The Moon gives us our soul, as it governs our state of mind, including our thought process, emotions and intuitions. It rules our attachment towards things, people, how we influence others, our moods and character. Pregnancy, childbirth and fertility are also governed by the Moon  and its also the lord of plants and vegetation.

Worshipping Chandra is said to bring relief from all sorrows and helps in increasing mental and emotional strength, as it’s the fulfiller of wishes and dreams. Sri Ram was born on a full moon day and that is why he was called Rama Chandra and similarly the name Chandra Shekhara is given to Lord Shiva only, because he wears a crescent moon on his forehead. Lord Chandra adorns the head of Lord Shiva, so worshipping Chandra on Mondays is the effective way of getting blessed.

If the Moon is strongly placed, it signifies encouraging; caring, sensitive and receptive qualities along with being emotionally mature, mentally strong, responsible, being helpful and beneficial to others.

On the other hand if the Moon is weakly placed or associated with a negative planet, it is called as an afflicted Moon. Afflicted Moon can cause mental disturbance, emotional instability, confused thoughts, poor reasoning and personality disorders.

In Vedic astrology Chandra represents brain and mind, emotions, sensitivity, softness, imagination, queen and mother. The waxing moon is considered to be benefice, and the waning moon is considered to be malefic. The bright moon is considered a benefice of the highest order, while the dark moon is considered a malefic.

Chandra is lord of three nakshatras or lunar mansions that includes Rohini, Hasta and Shravana, with associations to white colour, silver metal, pearl gemstone and moonstone. Its element is water, direction is north-west and season is winter. The food grain associated with Moon is rice.

In astrology, the moon is considered as one of the best planets to be born under as it promises wealth and happiness.
